On International Epilepsy Day,<\/a><\/strong> we want to dedicate a few words to this neuronal disease on the VICON Method blog<\/a> , in order to understand how epilepsy affects the language of our non-verbal children.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

What is epilepsy due to?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Para empezar, ten\u00e9is que saber que, la epilepsia en los ni\u00f1os\/as se debe a factores<\/strong> neonatales<\/strong> en la mayor\u00eda de los casos. Donde el desarrollo de su lenguaje puede que no difiera demasiado del lenguaje de un ni\u00f1o\/a que no presenta la enfermedad.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, podemos encontrarnos s\u00edndromes como el S\u00edndrome de West<\/a><\/strong>, donde la epilepsia es una de las manifestaciones m\u00e1s frecuentes.\u00a0Los ni\u00f1os\/as con este s\u00edndrome s\u00ed que presentan alteraciones en el habla y la voz. Las llamadas disartria y afasia<\/strong>, as\u00ed como dificultades de aprendizaje<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

How can epilepsy affect language?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Depending on the intensity of the epileptic seizures and the affected area, language development will be more or less affected.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In aphasia<\/strong> , areas of the brain that are responsible for language<\/strong> are damaged, causing alterations in comprehension, expression, reading and writing<\/strong> . The absence of epileptic control will also cause behavioral problems<\/em> .<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

De esta manera, la capacidad de aprendizaje<\/strong> en los ni\u00f1os\/as que presentan epilepsia es diferente en cada ni\u00f1o\/a<\/strong>, por lo que debemos dise\u00f1ar un plan de intervenci\u00f3n espec\u00edfico<\/strong> para cada ni\u00f1o\/a.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Las dificultades m\u00e1s frecuentes las observamos en el proceso de lectoescritura<\/strong>, necesitando adaptaciones espec\u00edficas para lograr que este aprendizaje se lleve a cabo con \u00e9xito.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

We also found difficulties in the visual and auditory perceptual areas and in graphomotor skills<\/strong> . We must emphasize correct learning of reading and writing, such as adequate psychomotor development, laterality, body schema and visual and auditory perceptual structuring<\/em> .<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Thus, activities must be proposed to work on these areas.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Epilepsy can affect the language areas of the brain. Depending on the affected area and the extent of the injury , we can find in our children a general language delay<\/em> .<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In these cases it is effective to maintain adequate eye contact<\/strong> to ensure that the child understands what we want to say. Here the video modeling<\/a><\/strong> technique plays an important role. Well, it helps you focus your visual attention, generating learning, motivation always being our best weapon of attack and accompaniment<\/strong> , enjoy and you will surely be able to handle all the difficulties you have.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
