You knew what he ate, how he ate it, on which plate, and at what time. A fragile balance, but a balance nonetheless.

And then summer arrives and everything falls apart. You eat out, you eat late, you eat at other people's houses. The beach bar's menu isn't "what it used to be." Grandma made the food "with love" and she's not going to try it. And on top of that, everyone's watching.

And you, caught between the plate you're not touching and the table watching, thinking: "He just won't eat anything. And now I'm going to look like the mother who spoils him."

It's not that I'm picky. It's that food appeals to all the senses.

This is what almost no one understands about picky eating: eating isn't just about consuming food. Eating is about touching, smelling, seeing, noticing the texture in the mouth, the sounds it makes while chewing, the temperature. It's the most sensory-intensive activity a child engages in all day.

If your child processes sensory information more intensely—as is the case with many children, especially those with autism—a new food isn't "something new to try." It's an avalanche of unfamiliar information entering their mouth. And their body does what yours would do with something it perceives as a threat: reject it.

That's why he always eats the same thing. It's not stubbornness: it's security . The familiar doesn't surprise him. And in a summer where everything else is unpredictable, that security is worth more than ever.

Strategies for a summer without battles

Lower your summer goal. This isn't the time to expand their food repertoire. The summer goal is for them to eat enough and for the table not to become a battleground. You can work on variety in September, at your own pace.

Bring his anchor. When you go out to eat, bring a food you know he'll eat. It's not giving up; it's ensuring he gets something to eat. Let the rest of the table order whatever they want; he has his anchor.

Exposure without pressure. The new food can be on the table. It can be on their plate, in a corner. They can touch it, smell it, throw it away. All of that is exploration. No child learns to eat something they've been forced to swallow. Force creates rejection, not variety.

Be mindful of summer's temperature and texture. Melting ice cream, dripping fruit, sticky sand. Foods that worked in winter change texture and become less effective in summer. It's not a step backward; it's simply a different texture.

Take advantage of what they do like about summer. Ice cream, watermelon, slushies, cold water. These are intense and predictable textures. Many children enjoy them. Use them.

And for the table comments

There will be some. "He'll eat when he's hungry." "They forced me, and here I am." "It's because you let him."

Have a short, calm phrase ready, and don't offer any further explanation: "We're working on it with his therapist, thank you." Period. You don't need to give a lecture at the dinner table or justify yourself to anyone. Your child needs the dinner table to be a safe place, and for that, you need to be calm.

Food is also communication

Here's the twist that can change your summer: the dinner table doesn't have to be the place where you fight. It can be the place where you communicate.

Let them ask for "more." Let them point out what they want. Let them say "no" in a way that is understood. Let them choose between two options. All of that is good, functional language, learned in the most motivating context possible, because there is something real at stake.

And that ability to ask, choose, and make oneself understood is exactly what the VICON Method trains every day: ten minutes of play and song that build the words your child needs to tell you what they want. When a child can ask, the table ceases to be a battleground.

👉 Give her the words to ask for what she needs: try the VICON Method free for a week → https://www.metodovicon.com/login#registro

One thing to note: if your child is eating very little, losing weight, or you're genuinely worried about their diet, talk to their pediatrician. There are varying degrees of difficulty with school, and some cases warrant professional support.

Let him eat in peace this summer.
