The therapist says goodbye until September, you pack your backpack, and in the car a thought pops into your head that you almost don't dare say out loud:

"And now what? He's going to lose everything he's achieved this year."

I hear it a lot around this time of year. And I understand where it's coming from: every word, every glance, every time she asked instead of crying has been so hard-won, that the idea of two "blank" months is daunting. If you're feeling it, you're not exaggerating. It's the weight of knowing how much work went into it.

But I want to tell you what's really going on, because it's a relief.

What your child has learned won't be erased in July

The skills your child has developed this year—understanding a word, imitating a gesture, sustaining attention a little longer—aren't files that are erased when school closes. They are connections their brain has been building. And the brain doesn't unlearn during vacations.

What can happen, however, is something far less dramatic: a skill might rust a little from lack of practice. Losing a skill is not the same as rusting it. A rusty skill quickly returns once practiced; something lost would have to be rebuilt from scratch. And that, except in specific cases that should be discussed, almost never happens.

There is one exception that does deserve attention: if during the summer you notice a clear and sustained decline—losing words they used confidently, ceasing to respond to their name, or exhibiting previously established behaviors—this isn't simply "rusting" and it's advisable to discuss it with their healthcare professional. Not to alarm you, but to rule things out and put your mind at ease.

Summer is not a void: it's another stage

Here's the shift in perspective I want to share with you. At school and in therapy, your child learns in a highly structured environment. But real life—asking for ice cream, pointing at the sea, singing in the car—happens outside of that structure. And it's precisely there, in the everyday, that learning becomes generalized : it goes from "doing it at the table with the therapist" to "doing it anywhere, with anyone."

Summer, with its slower pace and new experiences, is one of the best times of year for that to happen. It's not a break from learning. It's another way of learning.

What to hold on to (and what to let go of)

It's not about replicating therapy at home. It's about keeping the flame alive with very little.

Ten minutes a day. A short, predictable, and enjoyable bit of "language time" sustains more than an hour forced on Sunday out of guilt.

What already works. That song they love, that game they ask for, that bedtime story. No need for new material: repeating what's familiar is the work of a good person.

Their interests as a starting point. If this summer they're obsessed with beach buckets, language enters through the buckets. Starting with what motivates them multiplies what they learn.

And let go of the rest. Let go of the idea that every day without a "ticket" is a lost day. It isn't.

The simplest way to keep moving forward

The fear of regression almost always says more about your commitment than the actual risk. You're a mother, a father, who cares about not losing the ground you've gained. That's love, not failure. And the good news is that maintaining that ground this summer is easier than you think.

The VICON Method is designed precisely for this: ten minutes a day, from home, in the form of games and songs , so that language development continues even when school and therapy have stopped. No materials, no setup required, wherever you are. And before the break, the method's assessment gives you a clear picture of where your child is at, so you can return in September knowing exactly where to pick up.

👉 Don't let your progress stop this summer: try the VICON Method free for a week and see for yourself → https://www.metodovicon.com/login#registro

Enjoy the summer.
