When will they start talking for real? But today we want to invite you to look at echolalia from a different perspective, one that's much more hopeful and understanding.

Echolalia, far from being an obstacle, is an incredible strategy the child's brain uses to approach language when they can't yet create their own sentences. It's their way of practicing, rehearsing, and connecting. Your child isn't "stuck"; they're building a bridge to communication.

There are several types of echolalia that you will surely recognize:

Functional Immediate: Repeat what you just said to ask for something, for example, "Do you want water?" while pointing at the glass. Here, repetition is communication.

Immediate nonfunctional: They repeat like an echo, with no apparent intention. But in reality, their brain is processing and organizing the language.

Delayed Functional: They retrieve phrases from days, weeks, or months ago ("Let's go to the park" as a way of asking to go out). They use what they know to express needs.

Deferred non-functional: They repeat entire dialogues without a clear connection. Even here, they are working out patterns and storing information.

The key isn't to eliminate echolalia, but to help transform these repetitions into a real tool for communication and connection. Supporting them involves responding to their statements, providing them with new models, and appreciating each attempt to make themselves understood.

At the VICON Method , we see every day how, with support and patience, echolalia transforms into meaningful words, into sentences that connect. If you're concerned about your child's echolalia, remember: it's not a mistake; it's a necessary step on their journey toward communication.

Would you like to learn more about how to encourage language at home?
