The village festivals, the open-air dance in the square, the music until three, the firecrackers, the fireworks on the last day. Everyone in the streets. Everyone waiting for you to come down.

And you, looking at your son, knowing exactly what's going to happen: "If I take him, he'll have a terrible time. If I don't take him, we'll be left out of everything again."

It's one of the loneliest decisions of the summer. And I want to help you make it without guilt.

A firecracker doesn't "scare" him: it hurts him.

Let's call things by their name. For a child with auditory hypersensitivity, a firecracker isn't just a scare. It's physical pain . The sound enters unfiltered, at an intensity their nervous system can't dampen, and the body goes into pure alarm.

And to that, at a street festival, add everything else: the pushing crowd, the flashing lights, the smells, the heat of the night, the unpredictability that something might explode at any moment. It's not one stimulus: it's ten at once, without warning and without escape.

When your child cries, covers their ears, or wants to run away, they're not "throwing a tantrum." Their body is screaming that they're hurting. And they deserve to be believed.

How to decide if you're going

There is no single answer. There is a useful question: who is this plan for?

If you're going because he'd like to, because there's something he can enjoy, go for it: plan it well. If you're going just because "it's what everyone does," because the family expects it, because you feel bad that he'll miss out… stop. Missing a local festival won't ruin his childhood. A two-hour sensory overload, on the other hand, will leave his body reeling for days.

Not going is also a good decision. And you're not a mother who's isolating him. You're a mother who's protecting him.

If you decide to go: the survival kit

Noise-canceling headphones. They're not a luxury, they're a de facto medical tool. They completely change the experience. Wear them before you even arrive, not when you're already overwhelmed.

Prepare them with images and sounds. Show them videos of fireworks at home, with the volume low, a few days beforehand. Tell them what's going to happen, in what order, how long it will last, and when you'll leave. Predictability is half as scary.

Choose your spot, don't get carried away. Away from the stage, away from the fireworks area, on an edge, with an easy exit. From a balcony, from your car, from a distance. You can see a firework without being directly under it.

Set a time limit in advance. "Let's go for twenty minutes and then we'll leave." Stick to it, even if things seem to be going well. It's much better to leave on a high note than to leave in crisis.

Know the exit route clearly. The car should be nearby. The house should be close. An adult should be designated to go with him if necessary. Don't improvise in the middle of the noise.

And if it still collapses

It's not your fault. It's information: today it was too much. Take him away, reduce the stimulation, have silence, go to a familiar place, give him time. Don't explain anything while he's overwhelmed; his brain isn't in listening mode. First the body, then the words.

And tomorrow, without drama, just carry on.

The work that is done before

A child reaches August with more or less leeway depending on their daily routine. A nervous system that has had predictable routines, periods of regulation, and music every day has a greater capacity to absorb a strong stimulus than one that has been pushed to its limits for weeks.

That's what the VICON Method builds: a little bit of music, rhythm, and predictable repetition each day that helps your child's nervous system organize itself and better tolerate the world. It's not magic, and it won't stop a firework from going off loudly. But a more regulated child arrives at the party with more composure, and it makes a difference.

👉 Help your child be more settled by August: start a free week with the VICON Method → https://www.metodovicon.com/login#registro

And if this year you stay home watching the fireworks from the window, with your headphones on and a blanket on the sofa: that's celebrating too. And he'll enjoy it even more.

August in Spain is a vibrant month.
