Is he understanding? Why isn't he imitating? How can I help him express himself?

Communication doesn't just happen with words. It happens with gestures, looks, movements... and also with music. Music, far from being just entertainment, is a powerful therapeutic and educational tool that can open up paths where none seemed to exist.

Using the VICON Method , we work with musical strategies tailored to the needs of children with language difficulties, especially children with Down syndrome, to stimulate both verbal and nonverbal communication.

Here I share 5 musical strategies that really work, tested in real-life sessions and easy to adapt at home or in the classroom.

1. Repetitive rhythms to activate attention and language

Children with Down syndrome need more repetition to internalize concepts. Songs with repetitive structures, simple choruses, and associated movements (such as clapping or pointing to body parts) help establish connections between sound, gesture, and meaning.

💡 In the VICON Method, we use music videos with lyrics designed to help children anticipate, repeat, and identify everyday actions, such as "I wash my hands" or "I go to the bathroom," thereby activating understanding and expression.

2. Songs with gestures or sign language

Combining music with sign language or natural signs makes it easier to understand the message and reduces frustration from not being able to speak. Signs allow children to speak without saying anything , gaining confidence while their oral language develops.

✋ Our VICON Method songs include gestures and signs so the child can rely on visual and physical input. This accelerates the process of associating words, images, and actions.

3. Musical games to encourage imitation

Children with Down syndrome often struggle with spontaneous imitation. But when music is involved, everything changes. Using games like "repeat the sound," "do what I do," or taking turns singing activates key brain areas for imitation.

🎶 For example: singing a syllable like "pa-pa-pa" and having the child repeat it rhythmically. If done daily, it becomes a game that works on phonetics and auditory memory.

4. Structured music to create routines

Many children with Down syndrome feel more secure when there is structure. Using songs as markers for routines (one song for tidying up, another for greeting, another for eating) helps them anticipate what's coming and improves their understanding of their surroundings.

⏰ In the VICON Method, we create songs specific to the different moments of the day. This way, children understand that music not only entertains, but also "speaks" and guides them.

5. Music video modeling with real scenes

One of the most powerful strategies is to show children videos of other children doing real things while a song plays. Watching a child dress themselves while listening to a melody reinforces imitation and understanding.

📹 At VICON, we have a music video modeling library where children see scenes like getting dressed, using the bathroom, washing their hands, and so on, accompanied by songs that excite, guide, and connect.

What if he still doesn't speak?

Don't worry. Often, before speaking, a child begins to sing, hum, or move to music. That's the beginning. The important thing is that they begin to communicate in some way, and music can be that bridge that connects them to the world.

What can you do today?

Sing with your child even if he or she doesn't repeat anything.

Use songs to anticipate what's coming.

Introduce gestures or signs into the songs.

Record yourself doing routines and turn them into a song.

Make music a shared moment, not just a background moment.

The key is consistency, the emotional structure of the music, and the real connection you create with him in that moment.

Have you tried using music to communicate with your child or student with Down syndrome?
