“I don’t see progress”: what to measure when your child seems stuck (and how to sustain the process)

The scene that repeats itself (and hurts)

You've done everything "right": routines, materials, repetitions, therapy, patience. And yet a day—or a whole week—comes when you feel like there's nothing new.

There are no new words. There are no "better" behaviors. There are no visible results.

And then the nagging question arises: "What if it's not working?"

Before changing everything, I want to tell you something important: many times there is progress... but it's not in the place where we usually look.

Why real progress is sometimes invisible

When a child has difficulties with language, communication, regulation, or learning, progress is rarely linear. It's more like a spiral: it seems like you're going backward, but in reality, you're consolidating.

Furthermore, there are advances that happen "inside" before they are seen "outside":

  • It processes more (even though it doesn't say so yet)
  • Tolerate more (even if it still gets frustrating)
  • Anticipate more (even if you still need help)
  • He's getting more attached (even though he can't talk yet)

If we only measure "new words" or "perfect behavior", we will feel failure even when there is growth.

The VICON approach: measuring micro-signals that predict the jump

At VICON we work with a key idea: functional language is built on foundations .

And those foundations are seen in small, repeated, sustained signs.

Here's what to measure when you "don't see progress":

1) Attention: Will it stay a little longer?

You don't need 20 minutes of attention. Sometimes progress is:

  • He stares for another 10 seconds
  • He comes back after he leaves
  • Tolerates a transition with less resistance

Useful measurement: How many times does he "return" to the activity without you chasing him?

2) Communicative intention: Does he/she seek you out more?

Before speaking, the child needs to understand that communication is useful .

Signs of progress:

  • He looks at you to ask for help.
  • It brings you an object
  • He takes your hand to show you something.
  • Protest with intention (yes, that counts too)

Useful measurement: How many “intentions” do you see per day, even if they are not words?

3) Imitation: Does it copy anything (even if it's minimal)?

Imitation is a highway to language. Sometimes the progress is:

  • Copy a gesture
  • Copy a sound
  • Copy a rhythm
  • Copy a simple action in a game

Useful measurement: What are you copying today that you weren't copying 2 weeks ago?

4) Comprehension: Does it respond better to simple things?

Understanding usually grows before expression.

Signs:

  • Understand “give me”, “come”, “more”, “it’s over”
  • Follow a routine with less help.
  • Anticipate the next step

Useful measurement: How much help do you need today for the same routine?

5) Regulation: Does it recover a little sooner?

It's not about "not having a crisis". It's about coming back .

Signs:

  • Cry for less time
  • Embrace change with support
  • It calms down with a strategy (music, breathing, hug, object)

Useful measurement: How long does it take to become available to learn again?

What often sabotages the perception of progress (without you realizing it)

  • Change strategy every 3 days (no consolidation time)
  • Measure only big results (words, phrases, “ideal” behavior)
  • Doing everything when you're exhausted (without adherence there is no progress)
  • Turn the house into "exam mode" ("what is this?", "what's it called?")

Real progress = meaningful repetition + emotion + pause + routine.

7-day mini plan (to track progress)

Day 1: Choose 1 fixed routine (for example: snack time). Don't change anything else.

Day 2: Define 2 signals to measure: attention + intention (only those).

Day 3: Apply the “3-second pause” after your model.

Day 4: Record 30 seconds (just for yourself). Sometimes the progress is shown in video.

Day 5: Repeat exactly the same. Don't "level up". Consolidate.

Day 6: Add a visual aid (first/then, pictograms, real object).

Day 7: Check: Is there more "come back", more "look for you", more "tolerates"?

Checklist: What to measure when “there is no progress”

  •  ¿Estoy midiendo micro-señales, no solo “palabras nuevas”?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if there really is no progress?

A: If after 4–6 weeks of maintaining a clear strategy you don't see changes in attention, intention, imitation, or regulation, it's advisable to review: level of difficulty, visual supports, sensory load, sleep, health, and coordination with professionals. Sometimes it's not "not progressing": it's that the environment is demanding too much.

Q: Is it normal to do something one day and not the next?

A: Yes. It's part of the learning process for individuals with difficulties in generalization or regulation. It doesn't mean a loss. It means the skill isn't yet automatic.

Q: What do I do when I get desperate?

A: Lower the goal. Go back to a short routine (15–20 min), with a single focus. Progress needs calm and sustainable repetition, not intensity.

Q: What kind of progress is VICON looking for first?

A: First: availability (regulation + attention), then intention and imitation, and from there functional language and generalization. It's a structured path.

Sometimes progress isn't about "saying a new word".

Sometimes progress means that he stays , looks for you , tolerates you , comes back .

And that… is exactly what the jump predicts.

If you want a step-by-step guide to sustain the process without burning out (and know what to really measure), at VICON you have short routines, therapeutic videos, music and visual aids to build those foundations.
