Repeating for the sake of repeating doesn't teach: how to repeat so that learning happens (pause, emotion and turns)

Repetition isn't about saying the same thing 30 times. Useful repetition is: predictable + with pauses + with emotion + with turns + with variation . When we repeat "for the sake of repeating," the child tunes out or gets frustrated because there's no space to engage.

Why flat repeat doesn't work

Unstructured, mechanical repetition is one of the most common pitfalls at home. We believe that "the more we repeat, the more they will learn," but the reality is different: if the adult occupies all the space (words, questions, insistence), the child cannot participate.

And without participation, there is no functional learning.

It usually fails for four reasons:

  • There is no pause (no opportunity to respond)
  • There is no appointment (the adult takes all the time)
  • There is no emotion (no anchoring)
  • There is no variation (it does not generalize)

The rule of thumb that changes everything

A simple structure:

  • 1 word or 1 action
  • Actual pause of 3–5 seconds
  • Child's turn (look, gesture, sound, action)
  • Repeat

We're not looking for "perfect delivery." We're looking for participation in the exchange .

Live example (to make it clear)

If you want to work "more," it's not: "More, more, more... do you want more? Say more... come on... more..."

Is:

  • You: “More.” (pause)
  • Child: (looks / gestures / vocalizes)
  • You: “More.” (same emotion)
  • Pause
  • Child: (another turn)

In the first case, you press. In the second, you create space.

Repetition with variation: the key to generalization

Repeating the same thing in the same context can create routine, but it doesn't always create generalization. Generalization means your child understands that the word is useful in different situations and with different people.

Examples:

  • “More” at snack time (more biscuit, more water)
  • “More” at stake (more tickling, more jumping)
  • “More” in the park (more swings)
  • “More” with another person (dad/grandma)

The word is the same. The context changes slightly. That's where the real learning happens.

10-minute structure (ready to copy)

  • 2 minutes | Intro: song/rhythm that sets the tone.
  • 6 minutes | Single objective: one functional word (more/give me/another/no) with pauses and turns.
  • 2 minutes | Minimal variation: you change one detail (another object or another person).

Typical mistakes that stifle learning

  • Asking too many questions (exam mode)
  • Ask her to repeat it
  • Increase the volume when it doesn't respond.
  • Change your goal every day
  • Do not leave real pauses

7-day mini plan

  • Day 1–2: Choose 1 functional word and its gesture.
  • Day 3–4: same time of day + real breaks.
  • Day 5–6: minimal variation (object/person).
  • Day 7: third context + record signals (more turns, less avoidance, more intention).

Checklist

  • 1 functional word
  • 1 gesture
  • Pauses 3–5 seconds
  • Actual shifts
  • Same emotion
  • Minimum variation
  • Don't ask for a repeat.
  • Do not fill silences

Frequently Asked Questions

What if they don't respond during the pause? You model the behavior, without getting angry. Sometimes learning comes from observing before acting.

How long should I work on a word? A minimum of 2–3 weeks in the same context, and then variation.

Can I work on two words at the same time? It's better not to. A well-worked word has a generalizing effect.

Is repetition only useful for words? No. It's useful for actions, routines, and comprehension.
