Sensory perception in autism: it's not just quirks, it's the body trying to organize itself

“They’re not just quirks”: what’s usually behind them

In many children with autism, certain behaviors appear to regulate the input of sensory information : sounds, textures, lights, smells, movement, touch.

Sometimes we see it as "he gets annoying," "he becomes obsessed," "he can't tolerate anything." But often it's the body saying, "this is too much for me" or "I need more to get my bearings."

Sensory perception in autism: two extremes (and both are tiring)

  • Hypersensitivity: everything bothers you (noises, labels, crowds).

  • Hyposensitivity: needs more intensity (moving, bumping, biting, jumping).

Neither is "bad". They are different ways of processing.

6 simple supports that usually reduce internal noise

  1. Trigger map : what happens first? (noise, hunger, transition, hurry).

  1. Entry and exit rituals (home–street–school): 2–3 repeatable steps.

  1. Controlled choices : “sneakers or velcro?” (two choices, not ten).

  1. Planned sensory breaks : movement, pressure, breathing, water.

  1. Clothing/environment settings : no tags, headphones, softer light.

  1. Validating language : “It bothers you, I understand; let’s help you.”

The key idea

Sensory processing in autism is not corrected with lectures. It is addressed with structure, adjustments, and respect .
